Important about grounding

How to connect grounding sheets, grounding pads and wristbands

Important information about the Swedish electricity system

In some countries, grounding is done via the wall socket. In Sweden, the electrical system works differently.

Many properties have historically used what is known as a false ground, where the ground wire is connected to the neutral. This can lead to unwanted electrical voltage and is therefore not recommended.

Older buildings often use the four-wire TN-C system, which can be risky. Newer properties often have the five-wire TN-S system, but even there the ground wire can be reconnected to the four-wire system in the electrical distribution cabinet outside the property.

Therefore, Anders at Earthing People recommends not using the wall outlet’s ground when safer alternatives are available.

A real-life test that changed the way we think about wall sockets

To understand the risks, Anders at Earthing People tested grounding himself via the wall outlet in a house built in 1959.

The measuring instrument showed 2.2 volts in the ground wire – a voltage that should not be there.

He assumed it was harmless because there was no closed circuit.

The first night, my sleep became restless and my stomach reacted strongly.
The second night the symptoms repeated.
On the third night he fell asleep from sheer exhaustion.

The discomfort continued for over a week.

Electricians have later confirmed that similar voltages can also occur in newer electrical systems.

That experience completely changed the view on grounding via wall outlets.

Therefore, Earthing People strongly advise against this method.

Choose a safe grounding plug

Use instead:

• ground rod in the ground
• ground clamp on metallic water pipe

These methods direct the earth’s free electrons directly to the body — just like when you stand barefoot on the ground.

Install ground rod step by step

  1. Pull the cord through the nearest window.

  2. Place the ground rod in moist soil some distance from the house wall.

  3. In case of frozen ground: pour hot water or hit the pole with a hammer (remove the plastic sleeve first).

  4. Secure the cord so no one trips over it and bury it shallowly.

You can attach the cord with cable clips to wooden facades, adhesive or hot melt glue to plaster, or cable ties along downspouts.

The window can be closed over the cord without damaging it. If you drill a hole for a lead-through, it should be carefully sealed.

The ground wire is approximately 15 meters long and normally reaches up to the third floor.

If you live in an apartment building

If you live higher up, you can use a ground clamp on:

• metallic water pipe
• pipes for water-based heating
• metal part on element

Scrape off about two centimeters of paint for good contact and tighten the clamp by hand. If the pipes are plastic, a metal part must be used.

Check that the products are working

Test the conductivity according to the instructions on the grounding FAQ.

Everyone reacts differently

Some feel the effect immediately. Others notice changes after a few weeks.

Please write down any symptoms before you start, for example:

• sleep problems
• pain
• allergies
• stress level

Follow up every week.

Stress, illness and life situations affect how quickly the body responds. Regular grounding produces results over time.

Drink more water than usual at first.

Customize the time you are grounded

Feel how your body reacts at first. If you experience discomfort, start with 1–2 hours per night and gradually increase the time over a few weeks.

Some people experience a temporary reaction as the body begins a cleansing process. Drink extra water during the initial period to support the body’s natural detoxification.

Sleeping on a grounded sheet is equivalent to resting directly on the ground. Grounding restores the body’s electrical contact with the earth, which can contribute to better balance in the body and support the immune system.

Earthing and blood thinning medication

Earthing affects blood viscosity and can contribute to a natural blood thinning effect. Previous warnings about combining with blood thinning medications have been removed. A simple rule of thumb: if you can swim in the ocean or lake and walk barefoot on the ground, you can also use earthing indoors.
