Description
Gotu kola is one of the most important plants/herbs in Ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. It is an adaptogenic herb that has many uses in traditional medicine.
Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) also called Salad Spike Leaf or Brahmi herb is a small Asian vascular plant belonging to the family of floccose plants (thus it is related to e.g. parsley and dill). The green leaves are fan-shaped with white or pink to light purple flowers and small oval fruits. It is the stems and leaves that are used in traditional medicine.
Gotu Kola is a well-known and widely used herb, mainly in China, Indonesia and India for thousands of years. The plant has long been called the ‘source of life’ as legend has it that an ancient Chinese herbalist lived for more than 200 years as a result of eating Gotu Kola. In China it is also called ‘sky full of stars’ and in India ‘Brahamis’ after Brahman, which means god. Gota kola is considered the purest of all the herbs in Ayurvedic medicine and is said to open the crown chakra and provide a higher level of awareness and inner peace. It is therefore used in Indian medicine for psychological and spiritual development and to increase intelligence. The herb is also widely used in Ayurveda to purify the blood, increase micro-blood circulation, reduce edema and support healthy skin and hair. The herb is considered one of the most important plants/herbs in Eastern medicine and is referred to as an important life elixir in these healing arts.
There have also been various modern controlled studies on the effects of the herb.
